The 2019 summer flat racing season may steadily be drawing to a close, but one of the highlights of this year’s racing calendar takes place this week as the 2019 Ebor Festival gets underway at York.
The highlight is the annual International Stakes (Juddmonte International). It’s a race that boasts a prestigious roll call of winners and a hefty £1m in prize money. Previous champions include Authorized, Sea The Stars and arguably the best thoroughbred racehorse of all time, Frankel.
Read on for our in-depth look at the Juddmonte International, the latest racing betting odds for the festival and our quickfire picks for the rest of Wednesday’s action from York.
York Ebor Festival – Racing Preview
Juddmonte International Stakes – 15:35
It’s hard to swim against the tide of popular opinion when it comes to the credentials of early pre-race favourite Crystal Ocean (Evens). After his epic battle against Enable in one of the greatest King George VI & Queen Elizabeth stakes in living memory, he looks in perfect shape to make it a magnificent seven for Sir Michael Stoute in this race.
Alternatively, could Japan (5/1) rise to the occasion at Knavesmire? After a vintage 2019 return that includes wins in the King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot and the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp, he could make a statement as he returns to 1m2½f.
A gallant runner-up in the Sussex Stakes last month Circus Maximus (8/1) could find the slightly longer distance here a better fit after being edged out by Too Darn Hot in their duel at Glorious Goodwood. He had the beating of fellow Juddmonte runner King of Comedy (4/1) in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and could relish the good ground expected at York.
Regal Reality (20/1) could be in the each-way reckoning with a signature win over this distance at the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in April and has already enjoyed a run-out around the Knavesmire course with a fourth-place finish in the York Stakes back in July.
Finally all that Lord Glitters (25/1) could be gold if David O’Meara’s inconsistent six-year-old can rediscover the form that saw him take a surprise win from the late Beat The Bank in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, although a lowly fifth-place finish in the Sussex Stakes gives cause for concern.
