UEFA Super Cup Predictions 2019 – Liverpool v Chelsea
Depending on your standpoint, this match arrives at the best or worst possible moment for new Blues boss Frank Lampard.
After his Chelsea side were humbled 4-0 against Man Utd at Old Trafford, this game offers the rookie Blues boss the perfect platform to launch an instant rebuttal to critics already questioning his suitability for the job after just one year in management. With Sunday’s scoreline more a reflection of Chelsea’s own self-inflicted errors rather than incredible Utd pressure, Lampard’s first job will be quickly ironing out the Blues’ obvious vulnerabilities at the back.
That could be tough against a Liverpool team that hardly had to get out of third gear to steamroller a newly-promoted Norwich City side in the opening game of the 2019/20 Premier League. The Reds hardly looked at their fluid best, but still managed to exploit the Canaries’ undercooked top-flight defence to ensure a healthy start to their latest title hunt.
Lampard can take encouragement from the fact this fixture has tended to be a close-run affair in recent seasons, with five of their last 10 league meetings ending in a stalemate. Two quickfire goals early in the second half from Sadio Mané and Mo Salah handed the Reds victory when these two sides last met in April at Anfield.
For different reasons, both sides will surely have one eye on the second round of Premier League fixtures this weekend. That means a low-key affair could be the order of the day in Istanbul as both managers continue to fine-tune their squads ahead of another intense campaign.
