Premier League Predictions and Preview
It’s Gameweek 10 in the Premier League with the table really starting to take shape with almost a quarter of the season gone.
Will there be any surprises this weekend?
Here’s our take on this week’s action – with our Fantasy tips and Premier League predictions…
Brighton vs Wolves
Wolves got a rude awakening last weekend as their impressive recent run was ended by a clinical Watford. They head to the Amex to take on a Brighton side looking to make it three wins in a row and high on confidence after finally recording an away win. The Seagulls may have to do without Glenn Murray following his head injury last weekend.
Safe pick: Shane Duffy, Brighton, £4.5m
Value pick: Ryan Bennett, Wolves, £4.2m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: An intriguing clash of styles awaits on the South Coast, but the loss of main marksman Murray could leave the Seagulls looking toothless in front of goal. A good chance for Nuno’s side to put last weekend’s blip behind them. A win for Wolves.
Fulham vs Bournemouth
This already has the feel of a must-win game for the Cottagers following an alarming slump in their form, mostly caused by their massive fragility at the back. A game against a side as open as Bournemouth may just favour the hosts, but Eddie Howe’s side have shown season after season they can box clever in these kind of games.
Safe pick: André Schürrle, Fulham, £6.0m
Value pick: Jefferson Lerma, Bournemouth, £4.5m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: This one is unlikely to feature last on Match of the Day given the attacking qualities of these two sides. Expect goals aplenty – with Fulham just holding out as they bid to turn their season around. Home win.
Liverpool vs Cardiff City
Neil Warnock’s side are finally off the mark in the Premier League after finding their goalscoring touch in their 4-2 win against Fulham. The Bluebirds could fall back down to earth this weekend against a Liverpool side that look to be clicking back into gear again after a comprehensive Champions League win in midweek.
Safe pick: Mo Salah, Liverpool, £12.8m
Value pick: Harry Arter, Cardiff, £4.9m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: It’s something of a free hit for Cardiff, but damage limitation will very much be the name of the game, with goal difference likely to be key come the end of the season. A comfortable home win.
Southampton vs Newcastle
The two most nervous sides in the division meet at St Mary’s with both knowing a win could change the narrative currently circling their clubs. The Saints have won just four times in 28 league matches on home soil, and Mark Hughes won’t have a better opportunity to start improving that ratio against a Newcastle side currently hurtling towards relegation. Rafa’s side look organised but uninspired as they continue their search for three points.
Safe pick: Danny Ings, Southampton, £5.6m
Value pick: DeAndre Yedlin, Newcastle, £4.5m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: The urge not to lose might override the desperate need to win for both sides here. A low-scoring draw could be on the cards – satisfying neither.
Watford vs Huddersfield
Reports of Watford’s demise may have been greatly exaggerated after they turned the form book on its head last weekend to see off a confident Wolves side. They’ve got a good chance to push their credentials as the best side outside of the ‘Big 6’ as they host a Terriers team likely to park the bus but offer little in the way of attacking threat.
Safe pick: Roberto Pereyra, Watford, £6.2m
Value pick: Alex Pritchard, Huddersfield, £4.8m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: Watford to make it two from two – although expect David Wagner’s stubborn Terriers side to make life difficult at Vicarage Road.
Leicester City vs West Ham, 5:30pm
Claude Puel’s Foxes side looked impressive in patches against Arsenal before the Mesut Özil show kicked into gear and they still look a force when fully on song. West Ham will be looking to nullify their attacking threat to avoid going on another unwanted losing streak.
Safe pick: James Maddison, Leicester City, £7.0m
Value pick: Declan Rice, West Ham, £4.4m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: If Jamie Vardy can shake off his stomach bug in time to lead the Leicester line, the Foxes should have just about enough to see off a Hammers side that still looks unconvincing after all their summer spending. Narrow Leicester win.
Burnley vs Chelsea 1:30pm
Sean Dyche’s side has been admired for their competitive spirit since winning promotion to the Premier League, but were left reeling last weekend after being well beaten at the home of the reigning champions. Another tough task awaits this weekend against a Chelsea team that narrowly avoided a home defeat to Man Utd last time out.
Safe pick: Marcos Alonso, Chelsea, £7.0m
Value pick: Charlie Taylor, Burnley, £4.4m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: Burnley will huff and puff as always, but Chelsea should have enough in their locker to carve out the victory they need to stay up with the pacesetters.
Crystal Palace vs Arsenal, 1:30pm
Roy Hodgson currently looks out of luck as he looks to drag Palace out of their recent rut. The Eagles nearly escaped with a point against Everton, but really need to find an alternative way of registering points on the board if star man Wilfried Zaha isn’t fully firing. Arsenal currently look the real deal under Unai Emery and will be hoping for some more magic from Mesut Özil.
Safe pick: Mesut Özil, Arsenal, £8.4m
Value pick: James Tomkins, Crystal Palace, £4.4m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: It’ll be a tougher afternoon at Selhurst Park for Arsenal than many they’ve had recently, but the Gunners currently look like a side really enjoying their football and one that can score at will. Away win.
Man Utd vs Everton, 4:00pm
Jose Mourinho goes toe-to-toe with the man who looks like his version 2.0 in Marco Silva. An improving Everton head to Old Trafford looking to make life even more difficult for the ‘Special One’ after the Reds’ limp 0-1 defeat to Juventus in midweek. Everton last won at Old Trafford five years ago – can they grab another rare win this weekend?
Safe pick: Marcus Rashford, Man Utd, £6.7m
Value pick: André Gomes, Everton, £5.4m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: It won’t necessarily be pretty, but Utd to edge past the Toffees to claim all three points.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City, 8:00pm
The Premier League knows how to keep the fans wanting more, with the game of the weekend taking place on Monday night. The reigning champions take on a Spurs side quietly going about their business in the league despite a growing injury list. With Champions League progress now looking almost out of reach for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, will they switch their attention fully towards domestic matters?
Safe pick: Sergio Agüero, Man City, £11.3m
Value pick: Davinson Sánchez, Spurs, £5.8m
Fantasy Football Analyst prediction: City look to be coming into peak form at just the right time after comfortable back-to-back victories against Burnley and Shakhtar. If they can get an early lead, Spurs may not have the options on the bench to change things up. Away win.
