Premier League Boxing Day – Gameweek 19 Preview and Predictions
All games 3pm kick-off unless stated
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR VS BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION, 12:30
The lowdown: Spurs will look to make amends against Brighton on Boxing Day after slumping to a shock 3-0 defeat on the South Coast earlier this season. That game was arguably the beginning of the end for Mauricio Pochettino in North London, but the Seagulls can expect a much sterner test this time against a Spurs side much improved under Jose Mourinho. This game ended in late heartbreak for Albion last season as Christian Eriksen’s 88th-minute strike handed the home side a 1-0 win.
Verdict: Spurs to edge out the Seagulls. 2-1
BOURNEMOUTH VS ARSENAL
The lowdown: New Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta continues life as a Premier League manager with a trip to the South Coast. The Gunners will be looking to make it four wins in a row against the Cherries, although Eddie Howe’s side did beat them 2-1 at the Vitality in January 2018. Much will depend on the form of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has scored roughly two-thirds of Arsenal’s total goals on the road this season.
Verdict: Nothing to separate the two sides. 1-1
ASTON VILLA VS NORWICH CITY
The lowdown: A huge relegation six-pointer awaits at Villa Park with the home side aware a victory would hand them a comfortable cushion over the struggling Canaries. Norwich were left shell-shocked at Carrow Road earlier this season as Villa romped to a 5-1 win. However, the Canaries shaded this fixture 2-1 in the Championship last season.
Verdict: An important victory for Villa. 2-1
CHELSEA VS SOUTHAMPTON
The lowdown: Chelsea will be looking to avoid another South Coast slip-up at Stamford Bridge after slipping to an unexpected 1-0 home defeat to Bournemouth last time around in West London. Saints have lost seven of their last eight meetings in all competitions with the Blues but showed they are no pushovers with a 0-0 draw last season.
Verdict: No bother for Lampard’s men at the Bridge. 2-0
CRYSTAL PALACE VS WEST HAM UTD
The lowdown: Boxing Day wouldn’t be Boxing Day without some kind of London derby. West Ham make the short journey south to Selhurst Park looking for a third away win in four games. The Eagles have been a tougher nut to crack this season on home soil, with their only defeats coming against the top three. Both sides shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw last season.
Verdict: Score draw at Selhurst. 1-1
EVERTON VS BURNLEY
The lowdown: It’s a bold new era on Merseyside as Carlo Ancelotti takes charge of Goodison Park. He could face a baptism of fire against a Clarets side that have often made life difficult for the Toffees in recent encounters, with Sean Dyche’s winning three of their last five encounters. Burnley edged the reverse fixture back in October with a 1-0 win at Turf Moor.
Verdict: Toffees to treat themselves to all three points. 2-0
SHEFFIELD UTD VS WATFORD
The lowdown: The Blades will be looking to end a near-flawless first half of the season on a high as they host rock-bottom Watford. Inconsistent home form has been an occasional Achilles’ heel for Chris Wilder’s side in an otherwise memorable campaign, with the Blades losing four of their 10 home games. These two sides played out a drab 0-0 draw when they met back in October at Vicarage Road.
Verdict: Bramall Lane to be bouncing on Boxing Day. 2-1
MAN UTD VS NEWCASTLE UTD, 17:30
The lowdown: It’s Ole vs Brucey on Boxing Day as two Old Trafford crowd favourites lock horns on Boxing Day. Neutrals will be hoping for a repeat of the last meeting between these two clubs, where Utd produced one of the all-time great Premier League comebacks to win 3-2 after being 2-0 down with nearly 70 minutes of the game gone. The Magpies will be looking for a first win at Old Trafford since 2013.
Verdict: Ole to win the battle of the Red Devils legends. 1-0
LEICESTER CITY VS LIVERPOOL, 20:00
The lowdown: Boxing Day has a habit of serving up sensational games, and 2019 is no different as league leaders Liverpool travel to surprise top three challengers Leicester City. The Foxes are unbeaten at home this season but stumbled to a draw against Norwich last time out on home soil. Liverpool have occasionally struggled in the East Midlands, losing on three of their five last trips to the King Power.
Verdict: League leaders to settle for the draw. 1-1
WOLVES VS MAN CITY, 19:45
The lowdown: City travel to Molineux on Friday night keen to make amends for the 2-0 home defeat at the Etihad earlier this season. Wolves will be looking to complete a rare league double over the reigning champions but will be fighting against history to do so, with 2010 the last time they managed to edge past the Citizens on home soil. This game finished 1-1 last season with Aymeric Laporte rescuing a point for the eventual champions.
Verdict: City to sneak it. 1-2
