One of the biggest prizes in Irish horse racing is up for grabs today as an open-looking field of talented three-year-olds bid to land the prestigious 2000 Guineas.
Action from the Curragh plus the nine-race card at Kempton head up our Friday racing tips…
Irish 2000 Guineas Tips (18:40, the Curragh)
It’s Irish 2000 Guineas day at the Curragh, with Aidan O’Brien gunning for a sixth win in 10 years in Ireland’s first classic of the season. The legendary trainer has six of the 11 contenders in the Group 1, 1m race, with his chances headed up by the lively Lope y Fernandez.
The one to beat could be the sure-footed Siskin, who is unbeaten in four starts and looks Ger Lyons’ best shot yet at landing a first Irish Classic, while Galileo colt Armory looks to have a favourable draw to launch an assault over one of his favourite trips. Further down the field, Fiscal Rules is an unknown quantity but chalked up a noteworthy second to big player Wichita on his one run-out to date and could be one to watch.
Our Picks – Irish 2,000 Guineas
Lope Y Fernandez – 4/1 – form can be hit and miss, but he’s capable of catching fire with previous form around the Curragh.
Fiscal Rules – 16/1 (E/W) – could be a worthy investment after debuting with an impressive second behind 2,000 Guineas runner-up Wichita last August.
KEMPTON RACING TIPS
14:45 – Sword Beach – 12/1
Likely to stake an each-way claim after lancing through the rest of the field at York last autumn.
15:15 – My Boy Sepoy – 9/1
Could shine here despite a sluggish start to 2020 to cap off a week to remember for Oisin Murphy.
15:45 – Dark Regard – 13/5
Definite claims to destroy the opposition here if he can reclaim his autumn 2019 form.
