Cricket World Cup Final 2019 Predictions and Betting Preview
England take on New Zealand at Lord’s with Eoin Morgan bidding to become the first English captain in history to lift the Cricket World Cup.
Despite their justified tag as pre-tournament favourites, reaching this stage is an impressive feat for England given their history in this competition. It’s been over 27 years since they last reached the final, losing by 22 runs to Pakistan in 1992.
It’s been a Cricket World Cup that has served up plenty of curveballs. Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that 2019 has ultimately served up a final few cricket fans were expecting. England and New Zealand were both dogged by inconsistency throughout the group stages, with only final game wins securing their places in the semi-finals. However, both England and the Kiwis are more than capable of flashes of brilliance, particularly in their bowling armory. That was made clear by their respective demolition jobs earlier this week.
Early purple patches from their opening bowlers ultimately helped England and New Zealand effectively neuter India and Australia’s explosive firepower. Given the success both enjoyed with the ball in midweek, both captains will surely look to repeat that trick in Lords by applying early pressure.
New Zealand pose plenty of danger
A second consecutive final appearance is a fine return for a New Zealand side few expected to seriously trouble the latter stages of this tournament earlier this summer. Runners-up in 2015, a win on Sunday would, like England, guarantee the Kiwis a long-awaited maiden Cricket World Cup win. Their surprise semi-final victory against India ended a three-game losing streak in this competition. If they keep their composure again this weekend, New Zealand are more than capable of spoiling the party for the hosts at Lord’s.
While they lean heavily on Kane Williamson to add stardust, the Kiwis have shown time and again they can box clever to swing games in their favour. As the fifth best batsman at this tournament, an on-song Williamson could be the differential here if the hosts fail to live up to expectations.
England do hold the psychological advantage, however, after comfortably seeing off the Kiwis in the group stages. A star turn from under-fire Jonny Bairstow helped the hosts cruise to victory at Chester-Le-Street in one of England’s most dominant performances at this tournament.
Bairstow’s top score of 106 helped England towards a ruthless 119-run victory over their final opponents earlier this July. Fans of the Barmy Army will be hoping for an equally relaxed afternoon on Sunday. Can England become history-makers?
