Dundee United player leaves club after bizarre handball incident

Well this is certainly one of the strangest reasons for leaving a football club.

Dundee United defender Gavin Gunning has kicked his last ball for the club after a strange handball incident in the weekend game against Caley Thistle.

Fans lost their head when the Irishman stopped play by PICKING UP THE BALL during a period of possession and walking off with it. It emerged the 25-year-old took a blow to his knee and wanted to come off the field. Check out the incident in the below tweet from the local paper:

Gunning took a heap of abuse as he head to the United dressing room and reacted by ironically clapping the crowd.

The press report he was called to a meeting today and told he would not be selected for the remainder of his short-term contract, which ends this month.

A brief statement from the club read: “Gavin Gunning has left Dundee United by mutual consent. This is a private matter and the club will not make any further comment.”

It’s the kind of stuff you see at Sunday League, right?
