Who will win the 2019 Cricket World Cup?

We’re into the final two weeks of a thrilling Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. With the semi-finals in sight, which four nations will be lighting up the final fortnight?

Below we look at the current state of play, plus some intriguing cricket betting markets as the tournament moves into its final stages.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 State of Play – Who Will Make the Semi-Finals?

Hosts and early favourites England have wobbled under the pressure, but kept their qualification hopes alive with an assured win over India. Trevor Bayliss’ team finally looked like fulfilling some of their pre-tournament promise on Sunday.

England will now look to wrap up qualification with victory over New Zealand at the Riverside Ground on Wednesday but will have to tread carefully. A defeat in Durham combined with victories for Pakistan or Bangladesh could see the hosts make a shock early exit. The Bangladeshis also have two bites at the cherry to reel England in as they go up against India and Pakistan.

Australia are currently sitting pretty at the top of the World Cup group table, and are the only side assured of their place in the semis. They will expect to rubber-stamp top spot in their final game against South Africa at Old Trafford. The Proteas have arguably been this tournament’s biggest disappointments. However, the 2015 semi-finalists could yet salvage some pride by signing off with a win against the Aussies.

That result would most likely open the door for India to top proceedings going into the semi-finals. An under-par performance against England aside, they still look capable of moving their game up another gear if needed.

A healthy net run-rate should provide New Zealand with the ballast they need to progress regardless of the result at the Riverside. Recent defeats against Pakistan and Australia suggest momentum is moving elsewhere, however, particularly if England can repeat their batting performance against India in midweek when they take on the Kiwis.

Finally, should Eoin Morgan and co endure another off-day against New Zealand, Friday could be decisive in shaping the tournament. Pakistan would then take on Bangladesh with a real shot at claiming a semi-final berth.

Could an entertaining summer of ODI cricket serve up a surprise winner? England fans will be hoping the answer is an emphatic ‘no’ as they look to avoid early elimination.
