Cardiff vs Leeds

After weeks of discussions off the field, Championship players finally have the chance to do their talking on the pitch this weekend as the EFL Championship season returns with a packed schedule of games in a bid to complete the season by 31st July.

Leeds are within touching distance of finally ending nearly two decades of pain beneath the top flight. Can Marcelo Bielsa’s side avoid a repeat of last season’s late collapse?

They face an early test away at Cardiff on Sunday in the pick of this weekend’s fixtures.

Championship Predictions – Gameweek 38

Saturday 20th June

FULHAM VS BRENTFORD, 12:30

The lowdown: It all returns with a fascinating West London derby at Craven Cottage with two rivals still with a narrow path intact to automatic promotion. It’s a lack of consistency that has often hampered both sides’ attempts to close the gap on Leeds and West Brom.

Fulham's Anthony Knockaert

Those two clubs would happily see a stalemate here. That outcome looks eminently feasible given the high stakes riding on a defeat for either, particularly for the home side.

Prediction: Draw

MIDDLESBROUGH VS SWANSEA CITY, 12:30

The lowdown: It’s not been plain sailing for both of these rookie managers in their debut seasons at this level, albeit its former England man Jonathan Woodgate whose had more to worry about during lockdown with Boro still firmly wedged in the relegation scrap.

The Swans have never quite looked convincing play-off candidates throughout this campaign, but started the season sharply under Steve Cooper. If he re-employs those methods, a late play-off charge could be on the cards.

Prediction: Away win

MILLWALL VS DERBY COUNTY, 13:00

The lowdown: It’s the Gary Rowett derby at the Den, with Millwall poised to spring a late play-off push if the former Rams boss can build on his impressive opening five months with the Lions.

Derby’s away form has been Philip Cocu’s biggest headache all season but the Dutchman now has the chance to fix that given the perceived lack of home advantage.

Prediction: Home win

BLACKBURN ROVERS VS BRISTOL CITY, 15:00

The lowdown: It’s the battle of two clubs bubbling just under the radar in the play-off push, although both will need to rediscover some consistency if they are going to keep their seasons alive deep into July.

Tony Mowbray Blackburn

Bristol City tend to be streaky under Lee Johnson and might just benefit more from the reset.

Prediction: Away win

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN VS WIGAN ATHLETIC, 15:00

The lowdown: Two sides still dicing with danger meet at the John Smith’s Stadium this weekend, with managers surely frustrated that the stoppage came at just the wrong time for their improving clubs.

Wigan had finally looked to have cracked the poor away form that has dogged them since returning to this level, so Paul Cook will be hoping that continues with the added advantage of no home crowd.

Prediction: Draw

HULL CITY VS CHARLTON ATHLETIC, 15:00

The lowdown: A fresh start is on offer for two teams plummeting in the spring, while Charlton will be hoping their off-field ownership saga won’t distract their survival ambitions on the pitch.

Grant McCann has had time for a re-think after losing his main stars in January, while Lyle Taylor’s contract situation hasn’t helped Lee Bowyer’s cause even if his main man looks to have backed down.

Prediction: Home win

LUTON TOWN VS PRESTON NORTH END, 15:00

The lowdown: Nathan Jones is back in the Hatters hotseat but it’ll be a muted reception behind closed doors at Kenilworth Road – probably no bad thing given his return hasn’t been welcomed by all sections of the Luton fanbase.

Nathan Jones Luton

He has an interesting start against a Preston side whose play-off hopes looked to be hitting the buffers in March.

Prediction: Draw

QPR VS BARNSLEY, 15:00

The lowdown: The onus really is on Barnsley to make the early running here with the Tykes perilously close to raising the white flag on their survival hopes after falling seven points adrift prior to the pause.

That extra motivation could see them sneak the win against a QPR side already making plans for next season’s Championship campaign.

Prediction: Away win

READING VS STOKE CITY, 15:00

The lowdown: Michael O’Neill will be hoping his side aren’t left rueing the break after a useful run of form prior to the pause that had seen the Potters ease just above the immediate relegation traffic.

The Royals probably need just one more win for safety.

Prediction: Home win

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST, 15:00

The lowdown: Forest signed off with a limp 3-0 home defeat to Millwall so Sabri Lamouchi might be relishing the chance for a reboot as they refocus on their play-off push.

Nottingham Forest v Millwall

His opposite number Garry Monk will certainly be thankful for some extended training ground time with the Owls posting just two wins in 14.

Prediction: Away win

WEST BROM VS BIRMINGHAM, 15:00

The lowdown: The Baggies looked a little off the boil before the break but Slaven Bilic will surely have his troops back firing ahead of the run-in given his players will be fresh again for a condensed Championship schedule.

The Croatian has arguably been handed the ideal start against a Blues side facing upheaval again. Head Coach Pep Clotet is serving out his tenure at the club before moving on at the end of this season.

Prediction: Home win

Sunday 21st June

CARDIFF CITY VS LEEDS UTD, 12:00

The lowdown: Surely, it can’t happen again? That’s the niggling concern for all long-suffering Leeds fans as the leaders embark on another gruelling run-in against Neil Harris’ unpredictable Bluebirds.

The good news for Whites fans is Marcelo Bielsa’s side are renowned for making fast starts, so mini pre-season conditions heading into this one might actually help them seize the initiative.

Cardiff are by no means out of the play-off reckoning after finally finding some rhythm in the second half of this campaign, but a Leeds side drilled to perfection by the Argentine might simply prove too strong.

Prediction: Away win
