Belarusian Premier League Guide

Belarusian Premier League Guide

As we all know, football has unfortunately come to a standstill in the last couple of months. However, there has been one football league that has come under the spotlight in recent weeks, the Belarusian Premier League. The division has never seen so much publicity, with teams such as Vitebsk and Slutsk becoming familiar names, and not just a team which may play on a Thursday night in the Europa League. As the league continues to grow in popularity, we thought we would give you an insight into the one of Europe’s last remaining leagues.

Belarusian Premier League 2019

Last season

Who was crowned Champions?  Dynamo Brest

Who was Relegated?  Dnyapro Mogilev, Gomel and Torpedo Minsk

Who achieved Europa League Qualification? – BATE Borisov and Shakhtyor Soligorsk

Who was Top Scorer? Iiya Shkurin (Energetik-BGU Minsk) scored 19 goals.

After finishing sixth in 2018, Dynamo Brest had a fantastic domestic season, with their first ever title, dethroning BATE Borisov, the successive 13-time champions. The main reason for Dynamo Brest’s success was down to their joint top scorers Dzyanis Lapstew and Pavel Nyakhaychyk, of whom netted a combined 24 goals. This led to Belarusian international Nyakhaychyk signing for previous champions BATE Borisov.

Belarusian Premier League  2019

This Season

Whilst the season is still young, with only a handful of games played, there have been some surprising results, with reigning champions Dinamo Brest already falling significantly behind leaders BATE Borisov as they bid to lift the title for a second season in a row.

The two teams put league action to one side this weekend as they go head-to-head in the Belarusian Cup Final. Whoever wins this weekend will break a little bit of history by becoming the first side to lift this trophy more than three times.

Best Players in the Belarusian Premier League

The players to look out for from the early action are:

Jasurbek Yakhshiboev

The young Uzbekistani international has got off to a great start scoring six goals and is the current joint top scorer in the league early doors. Can he continue his hot streak in front of goal as the season progresses?

Stanislaw Drahun

The experienced goalscoring midfielder, who has made 66 caps for the Belarus National Team, plays for league favourites BATE Borisov. The midfielder has a lot of experience within this league, playing over 100 times for Dinamo Minsk prior to a four-year stint in the Russian Premier League. If BATE want to get back to winning ways, Drahun will have to play an integral part.

Dzyanis Laptsew

The frontman of Dynamo Brest, he scored 12 goals last year, helped his side to win their first ever league title last season. However, if they want to win successive league titles, you would have thought he would need to continue his goal scoring prowess this season, as BATE Borisov look to redeem themselves and take back the title.
