Glasgow plays host to Premier League Darts this Thursday night with a whole host of players looking to secure an all-important victory to move clear of the elimination places.
Peter Wright’s terrible recent run in the competition continued last time out at the Motorpoint Arena as he went down to a second consecutive 7-1 defeat, this time at the hands of Michael Smith, who recovered from defeat in Leeds in some style to keep pace with Michael van Gerwen. The two table toppers will face off against each other in what looks to be the clash of the night in Glasgow.
Three-time winner MVG seems to be the man to beat yet again after comfortably dispatching a demoralised Gerwyn Price 7-3. The Welshman is still waiting to register his first victory in this competition, and currently looks resigned to elimination on Judgement Night.
Coming up on the rails is PDC World Champion Rob Cross, who, after a sticky start to his first Premier League Darts campaign, is starting to flex his muscles. The 27-year-old showed real class in overcoming an in-form Mensur Suljović 7-2 and posted the night’s highest average of 106.49. With Price to face next, Cross now looks a genuine contender to take Van Gerwen’s crown.
Crowd favourite Raymond van Barneveld continued to thrill the punters in Nottingham after forcing a memorable 6-6 draw with Gary Anderson. Barney has certainly provided value-for-money in this competition with a series of tight clashes, but will be hoping for a far more relaxed affair north of the border against a beleaguered Wright. Anderson will take on Simon Whitlock, with the Wizard slowly slipping away from the pacesetters after only managing a draw against struggling Daryl Gurney.
Along with Price, Gurney is still without a win to his name in this competition, but has also lost only one of his last four Premier League outings. Can he finally break his duck in Glasgow against Mensur Suljović? It’s getting close to now or never for the Northern Irishman if he wants to avoid a farewell swansong to the competition at Judgement Night in Liverpool.
