Fantasy Football Analyst 2018/19 – Gameweek 2

Another season of Fantasy Premier League football is underway.

Get off to a sluggish start? Here are our top picks for this weekend’s games…

Saturday’s games…

Cardiff vs Newcastle, 12:30pm
Neil Warnock will be desperate to get early points on the board, but could face a tricky tactical test against Rafa Benitez, even if Newcastle fans are still concerned at the lack of investment this summer.

Safe pick: Matt Ritchie, Newcastle, £6.0 – always reliable for an assist, particularly in this kind of game.
Value pick: Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Cardiff, £5.0 – one of Cardiff’s biggest threats last season, this is a good opportunity for him to make an early impact at Premier League level.

3pm games

Everton vs Southampton
With the jury still out on his managerial abilities, Marco Silva needs to hit the ground running at Goodison Park. Saints will look to build on a solid opening weekend draw with Burnley.

Safe pick: Cenk Tosun, Everton, £7.0 – with Richarlison sweating on his fitness, the Turkish striker will be expected to step up.
Value pick: Danny Ings, Southampton, £5.5 – only played a cameo role last week as he looks to prove his fitness, but could be a steal at that price as the third striker in your team.

Leicester City vs Wolves
Claude Puel is reportedly already under pressure at the King Power – can Nuno’s heavily-fancied Wolves side cause him even more problems?

Safe pick: Jamie Vardy, Leicester City, £9.0 – still looks hungry for goals with a poacher’s finish against Utd last week.
Value pick: Helder Costa, Wolves, £5.0 – impressive in spells in the Championship last season; could be undervalued at this price.

Spurs vs Fulham
Spurs got off the mark comfortably last week despite worries about a World Cup 2018 hangover for their players, whilst Fulham will be hoping to keep things tight after a disappointing opener.

Safe pick: Dele Alli, Spurs, £9.0 – showed no signs of World Cup 2018 fatigue with a lively performance against Newcastle.
Value pick: Luciano Vietto, £4.5, Fulham – a transfer that went somewhat under the radar on Deadline Day, the highly-rated Argentinian looks an interesting squad option for your Fantasy team.

West Ham vs Bournemouth
Two teams who will be looking to improve on disappointing campaigns last season. Can new Hammers boss Mauricio Pellegrini banish memories of an opening day thumping at Liverpool?

Safe pick: Mauro Arnautovic, West Ham, £7.0 – despite West Ham’s glut of summer signings, Arnie will be key to West Ham’s chances this season.
Value pick: Adam Smiith, Bournemouth, £4.5 – cheap as chips and picks up a surprising number of points from Bournemouth’s defence – perhaps not surprising for a team that can create chances at will in the right mood.

Chelsea vs Arsenal, 5:30pm
Surely the game of the weekend, with new managers in the spotlight. Will Sarri or Emery make an early statement of intent?

Safe pick: Willian, Chelsea, £7.0 – looks like a new signing after falling out with Antonio Conte towards the end of the Italian’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Value pick: Matteo Guendouzi, £4.5 – a surprise starter against City, the Frenchman looks the best value option in the field if Emery keeps the faith this weekend.

Sunday’s games

Burnley vs Watford, 1:30pm
Both got off to solid starts to the season last weekend, but will Burnley’s European exertions start to haunt them?

Safe pick: Chris Wood, Burnley, £6.5 – Burnley would be more than happy to go home with three points after a tight, one goal victory. Wood is usually the right man in the right place.
Leftfield pick: Will Hughes, Watford, £5.0 – still seems undervalued at this price, he’s never quite lived up to his early hype but this could be a big season for the 23-year-old.

Man City vs Huddersfield. 1:30pm
A hard-fought point at the Etihad set the Terriers on their way to achieving safety late in the day last season – can they possibly repeat the trick this weekend?

Safe pick: Bernardo Silva, Man City, £7.5 – an absolute steal at this price, and after racking up 8 gameweek points last time out, he might not stay at that price for long.
Leftfield pick: Aaron Mooy, Huddersfield, £5.5 – few will be expecting much from David Wagner’s side, but players do tend to have a habit of scoring against their former clubs.

Brighton vs Man Utd, 4pm
Brighton achieved Premier League safety in this fixture last season, but with momentum all important for the Big Six sides, they can expect a tougher test on Sunday.

Safe pick: Alexis Sanchez, Man Utd, £10.5 – has the pace and trickery needed to cause Brighton’s back line problems.
Value pick: Yves Bissouma, Brighton, £5.0 – one of the few bright sparks in Brighton’s limp 2-0 opening day defeat to Watford and will be pushing for a start at the Amex.

Monday’s game

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool, 8pm
A decent start for Roy Hodgson’s side, but will they have enough to stop a Liverpool side who already look genuine title contenders?
Value pick: Sadio Mané, Liverpool, £9.0 – looks in relentless mood after a match-winning display against West Ham, and will be looking to improve on his goalscoring tally this season.
Value pick: Jeffrey Schlupp, Crystal Palace, £4.5 – the Ghanaian can be inconsistent, but with the potential for a goal always in his locker, he looks a snip at his current price tag.
